Can how I change the monitor setting on Windows 98SE when I can't see the screen?

I had Windows 98SE installed on an old Gateway system. I was using a 12 inch old SVGA monitor on it after I installed Windows 98SE and it worked fine. I connected a Viewsonic 21 inch monitor and on boot it detected the new hardware and looked fine with that 21 inch monitor. I no longer have that monitor, but when I connected the old 12 inch SVGA monitor the screen display is so messed up I can't even make out what is going on to change the settings. I can boot from floppy disk to access drive C, but I don't know what to do to fix this. I really don't want to restore Windows. I'm looking for step by step instructions on how to fix this monitor issue so I can get the 12 inch monitor working again. Thanks! Can how I change the monitor setting on Windows 98SE when I can't see the screen?
Its easy. No need to restore Windows! When boot press shift+f5 (safe mode). Windows boots with 640x480 resolution. Then change to preferred resolution. Can how I change the monitor setting on Windows 98SE when I can't see the screen?
The monitor or display of a computer is the primary user interface. Monitor problems are some of the most common computer problems since the voltages inside a monitor can be as high as 10 KV. Many of the problems can be fixed yourself by simply changing the settings. Detailed instructions available at http://fixit.in/monitor.html

PC wont boot?

i purchased a dell optiplex gx50 with a wiped hard disk(no operating system installed) and i am having a problem, i boot the computer with the windows xp cd in the drive and press f2(setup) nothing happens, i also tried f12(boot setup) and that does nothing either, it just says entering setup and stays that way, the boot screen just stays the same with the progress bar nearly full, what am i doing wrong, how can i enter the BIOS to change the boot orderPC wont boot?
this may or may not work depending on what if any partitions where completley wiped

on boot up hold the ctrl key and push f11 this should bring up the hidden restore image .

making the restoration much easier

again this will only work if this partition has not been deleted

good luckPC wont boot?
Did you try hitting the ';Delete'; key during boot up?

Let me know if it works.

=)
I think Dell is f12 for boot options and f2 for bios, try f12 and then select your cdrom for boot device.

Oops i c u tried that already you might try a diff keyboard
The good thing about your computer is that Dell's Tech support is free for the life of the computer and it transfers to the new owners so phone their tech support and they will walk you through getting it up and running then once they have it up they will ask for control and when you grant it, they take control and fix your computer from where they are located.

I also have a Dell and they have done that for me with no charge.

Contact them via phone while sitting at your pc and they will walk you through it. No Charge!

Their tech support phone no. is 1-877-335-5767

or 1-800-847-4096 both toll free numbers. Have your computer product key ready they will need it to verify your ownership. It is on the sticker on the side of your tower.

If you just purchased it, they can also transfer the ownership to you at the same time.

Good Luck!

  • How do I change my BIOS to boot from USB instead of the hard drive?

My BIOS does support booting from USB and I'm able to get into the BIOS. Here's a picture of the boot order screen in my BIOS:

    http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/6746/my

As you can see, there are two drives listed in the ';hard drive'; section. The first is the internal hard drive, the second is the USB drive that I would like to boot from. I tried disabling the internal hard drive (with shift+1, as it says to), and when I tried to boot, I got an error message:

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

I am able to boot from a CD without a problem, whether or not the internal hard drive is disabled in the BIOS. I also know that the USB I'm trying to use works and is bootable. The internal hard drive in the computer is dead. How do I change my BIOS to boot from USB instead of the hard drive?
if you go into your bios settings there should be a way to change the boot order. if you have a newer computer you should see usb in the boot order. if it is there then move it above the hard drive. How do I change my BIOS to boot from USB instead of the hard drive?
There are a couple of things I can think of that might be causing the problem. One, there is no operating system on the USB drive to boot. Two, the boot order is being interrupted before getting to the USB drive, you should scroll down and highlight the USB device and press F5 until it is at the top of the list, and then press F10 to save the changes. Three, there is something wrong with your USB device, or it is not compatible with the BIOS. If it's not compatible with the BIOS, you should check if there is a BIOS update on the manufacturer's site.

    Hope that helps.
To boot to your USB drive I recommend this:

Make the hard drive the primary boot device in the sequence. Based on your picture you would use F5 or F6 to change the order.

Then within the Hard drive you should make the USB the first device that it looks to for booting.
Try inserting your USB device, restart and hit F12 during boot-up for one time boot devices.

As I couldn't get into my Bios screen the other day I removed the CMOS battery. Now my PC will not start.?

When I turn the PC on (packard bell) it just stays on that screen and I cannot enter the bios or change the boot sequence. I don't have the XP home cd for load up. It looks to me more of a hardware problem but not sure how as like I said not added anything or removed anything apart from the battery and I placed that back, only wanted to reset the bios settings. Any ideas? As I couldn't get into my Bios screen the other day I removed the CMOS battery. Now my PC will not start.?
this may sound silly but make sure your mouse and keyboard are plugged in.. being an older computer packard bell.. it has to see the keyboard and mouse to start

when you start your computer, before your os starts look at your screen for a BIOS prompt (usually F2 or the ';Delete'; key). Once in the bios look for ';Boot Menu'; and set your cdrom as the first boot device directly followed by your hard drive.

:-)How do i change it to boot from DVD drive? (Vista)?
When your computer starts, you must go into the BIOS settings (it should say which key to press - usually Delete or F3), and you have to change the boot priority of your devices.

(The BIOS menu is very intuitive, so you won't have many problems there.)

Does anyone know how to make an animated boot screen for Windows Vista?

I檓 not asking for a really high-end-graphic animated boot screen. But you know the little green progress bar in the default boot screen? The one that keeps going from left to right until the computer loads the logon screen or whatever? I want to change the color of the little progress bar and add a picture behind it.

And after you make it, how do you apply it? Can you apply it with the software called Vista Visual Master? I don檛 want to apply it by memory.

Also, can you animate things for .msstyles files too? Can you do that to the buttons (example: a button flashing when you hover your mouse over it)?Does anyone know how to make an animated boot screen for Windows Vista?
You have to edit the shell. Good luck with that.

    Ubuntu pixelation problem?

I recently decided to upgrade to Ubuntu 9.04. While in the installation process after a while the screen changes colors and pixelates. After trying to get through the installation before it happened I got it and it is now installed. But even now when I boot it it pixelates almost immediately.

On the Ubuntu help website it describes my problem perfectly and gives a solution that goes over my head.

    '; If your screen begins to show a weird picture while the kernel boots, eg. pure white, pure black or colored pixel garbage, your system may contain a problematic video card which does not switch to the framebuffer mode properly. Then you can use the boot parameter fb=false video=vga16:off to disable the framebuffer console. ';

How do you get to the part where you can change the boot parameter and how do I fix the problem from there? Can someone help me fix this problem in a way thats easier to understand?Ubuntu pixelation problem?
When you boot your computer.. After the bios screen.. You see something that says

    GRUB loading

    Hit 'esc' to enter menu

Well.. hit your esc key :-)

This will bring up the GRUB menu with the first entry highlighted.

hit 'e' to edit the commands..

hit the down arrow to go to the line that says 'kernel /boot/vmlinuz-----blah blah etc.. etc.. and hit your 'e' key again

it will take you to the end of that line and you can enter the boot parameters there.

you will see something like....... ro quiet splash

add what you want and hit enter

Then hit 'b' to boot the system

Hope the parameters are what you need to fix your system :-)

My computer has a blank screen when it boots, and it doesn't change?

I used a program to wipe both of the hard drives on my computer, now when i start my computer it goes to a black screen with a cursor blinking in the corner but you cant type anything. how do i fix it so i can load windows xp back on my computer? Its broken bring it in for repairMy computer has a blank screen when it boots, and it doesn't change?
you need to repair it if its all white its broken try and repair it ok
if its broken how can u put up this question
    you have to reinstall windows
If you have the installation cd for windows xp and you know what you do, you can boot from the cd and install a fresh windows xp installation.

On a second thought, this might be a bit too advanced to you.
When you bombed the drives, you wiped XP off too. Your machine should have an XP installation disc with it. Some newer machines have a partition called Recovery Angel so you could try reinstalling Windows from that. Search on Google to find out how to acess this partition. If you have a disc, simply insert it into the machine and follow the onscreen prompts to reinstall Windows.
Not sure if this works..but i can suggest you to try pressing the F8 key as soon as you turn on your computer...so that it opnes up a new screen where you can select the way you want the system to start at that moment. you will hve many options...it is self understandable once you are on that screen...thank and have a nice day..
You dumped your system. You need to insert your computers start up disk. The disk should walk you through the steps where you will enter codes. If you don't have disk that came with your computer you are S.O.L.
    - Restart and keep pressing F7 before any windows appear.

    - Then your bios will prompt you to boot the last known good configuration.
I would unplug everything, and start all over. Say a prayer, and hope it works.

My best of luck to you.

You shouldn't have done that, it could damage your Ipod.
your not supposed to be jailbreaking the newer ipods. doing so can mess up some of the new features that werent on the 1st generation. when you click restore you need to update it to the most recent software version. you may have to download it. also you can try pressing the power and the exit button at the same time for a few seconds to reset the ipod. that might help when you plug it in again. hope it works!

Help With Reinstalling XP on a Dell?

My Little brother's friend told him to bring his computer hard drive over to their house and so they can play on Computers together. (His friend has a spare computer) So My little did so, However some how I dont know how, They managed to completely break the hard drive (Im think its been stepped on or thrown) Well Its beyond fixing. So ive been out and brought a new hard drive for the Dell.

I have formatted and Reinstalled OS on a lot of Systems before but never a Dell. I followed the Dell manual but Nothing is happening.

The New hardrive is in correctly however once the Computer is passed Bios it just comes up with Boot Strike 1 failed press F1 to try again or F2 to enter set up. Ive been in the Bios and The hard drive is there showing up nicely like it should.

Im booting the Computer with the Dell XP Re install disk in the drive. I am getting No windows coming up, No blue screens, Just Boot Strike 1 failed press F1 to try again or F2 coming up on a black screen.

Ive changed Boot settings too, so it boots from CD/DVD drive and then Hard drive 2nd (and the other way around) and still nothing.

Ive also done the Whole F12 thing and selected every option out the 6 and still I get Boot Strike 1 failed press F1 to try again or F2 message.. Help? Any one have Ideas? Experinced this? Anything?Help With Reinstalling XP on a Dell?
Check to insure that the power and data cables are still connected to the CD/DVD drive. They may have been knocked loose when the hard drive was removed/installed.

If you are using IDE devices and both drives are on the same IDE cable then make sure that the drives are properly configured as Master/Slave with the hard drive as master and the CD/DVD drive as slave.

Check your Windows installation disk and make sure that it is still readable and does not have a lot of scratches or corrosion on it. You can actually try to boot on the disk from another computer just to check that the disk is still readable. To be safe, you can unplug the hard drive on the test computer to make sure that nothing is written to the test computer's hard drive.

Should the disk be bad Dell will replace them for you for a nominal fee.Help With Reinstalling XP on a Dell?
I can't understand WHY he would expect the HD from one computer to run correctly on another computer with different hardware. It doesn't work that way!

IF there was a spare computer, it should have had it's own OS and HD; OR he should have taken his whole computer, not just the HD.

It would need to boot from the CD/DVD drive FIRST in order to install an OS. (THAT is set in the BIOS.)

I assume this DELL had the OS pre-installed when purchased.

IF so, there was a ';hidden'; partition on the HD that contained MOST of the OS, and that the re-install disc NEEDS to access this partition to re-install the OS.

Your NEW drive lacks the partition, and therefore the needed information.

You can TRY to get Dell to give you a replacement, which, being an older OS they probably can't/won't do anymore; OR you can buy a NEW copy of the OS, IF you can find one, OR possibly a ';data recovery'; service could ';pull'; the information from the damaged HD and install it on the new one.

It is QUITE likely that a system that came with XP is NOT capable of handling Vista or Win7 and therefore can NOT be loaded with a newer windows OS.
try removing the cmos battery for a couple of minutes, it may be a bios problem.

also make sure that the new hdd jumpers are set to master and u have it plugged into the correct ide...
It doesn't sound like your using the correct Dell XP disc. You should be able to right to it and install the OS. Are you sure your not using a backup disc?

All Dells allow you to reinstall the OS and not even have to input a KEY!

Also it should be F12 then boot to CD and then hit enter to load OS from CD !

    RECHECK YOUR DELL INSTALL DISC.

Their are Two ways one is to edit the boot.ini file directly (not recomended)

The other is to right click on My Computer

    Select the advanced tab

Click on the ';Startup and Recovery'; Settings button

From the ';Default Operating System'; menu select your choice.

Click OK, on both windows and on next boot your default will be what you selected. How do I switch the order of Operating Systems on my boot-up screen (WXP)?
you can't if you have two o's on each hard drive you have to select one on boot up but if there on sepret hard drives you could always disconnect one of them an only use the one you use the most and if you want to use the other one just connect it i hoped that helped!
    1, all programs

    2, administrative tools

    3, system configuration

    4,click boot tab

then click on the one to delete or click default sounds better
JAB is correct. But my question is.....why do you have it set up this way? Why two XP's? Is one XP Pro and the other XP Home?

    Makes no sense.
Right-click on My Computer icon...go to Properties....Advanced....Startup and Recovery Settings. You can tell it to display the list of OS in the amount of seconds you want so you can choose.

If you just want to change the way it shows up then you have to edit the boot.ini file in the root directory (make sure you allow for hidden files to be shown). Just move them in the order you want to see.
Write click on My Computer. Click on properties. Then click on Advanced tab. In that select Startup and Recovery. Click on the settings tab. In it you will find at the top, the operating systems installed under the heading Default Operating System. Select the one you mostly use. Then go to edit tab. When you click on it you will go to boot.ini file. Here change the timeout to 0 and save.

I've been having a lot of computer problems and replacing the motherboard seemed to fix it. However, in one attempt to weed out a suspected software problem, a friend of mine booted a pirated version of XP. Naturally, when I found out that it was a hardware issue, I wanted to reboot my original operating system, but when the computer starts it goes to the motherboard's main screen instead of booting from the disk. How do I fix that?Motherboard won't let me boot from disk. How do I change it?
The ';motherboard's main screen?'; I assume that you mean either the bios screen or a so-called ';splash screen'; that contains an ad for the motherboard?

What you need to do is to set up the motherboard bios. First of all, you hit F8 repeatedly while the computer is booting up. That should take you the the bios screen where you can start changing the cmos settings. You have to make sure that the computer is set to boot to your hard drive by default. You should also disable the irritating splash screen. You need to go through all of the settings and pick the right ones for your hardware configuration. Then do a ';save and exit'; and reboot. It should boot to your hard drive. When you can get it to do that, then you want to load the drivers for your motherboard from the driver disk that came with it.

Then, you might have to work with it a bit before you get it set exactly right. Patience.Motherboard won't let me boot from disk. How do I change it?

Screen resolution changed and won't change back.. 10 POINTS IF YOU CAN HELP.?

So here's the deal. My computer was acting funky when I tried to boot up a video editing program. Program wasn't responding for 15 minutes straight so I unplugged the computer from the power unit it was on (did not reformat the system because all my stuff is still there.) BIG MISTAKE. I certainly will NOT be doing that again. Because when I restarted the system, the screen resolution was sitting at 640 something x 800 something and when I went into Control Panel to modify it, it wouldn't change. I also tried System Restore. Didn't do anything.

Note if you mistakenly tap F8 key again, it will continue through to normal boot, so power down and try again.

Scroll and select Last known good configuration.

This is stronger than doing a system restore in normal mode.

Wait till the boot has finished before clicking anything.

(System restore is the first line of restoration.

The second line is last known good configuration.

The third line is system restore in safe mode.

The fourth line is repair from your disk recovery console.

The fifth line is a delete partition with clean install).

After doing last known good restore and if you need to adjust the resolution follow this:

XP - update video or sound driver

    -------------------------------------

    in XP do this

click start %26gt;help and support %26gt;type in processor in the search

in the results look for find hardware and in there your video or sound card is displayed

highlite some of the video or sound card text of the name and type and press control +c to copy it

paste it in google and add driver

in the results pick one that looks like the manufacturer and download the latest driver

if its an exe file just double click it to install.

if its a driver file then right click my computer icon %26gt;manage %26gt;device manager.

For video expand display adapter %26gt;right click your video card %26gt;update driver %26gt;point wizard to your file.

for sound expand sound %26gt; right click the audio controller %26gt;update driver %26gt;point wizard to your file.

    reboot.

    for video

Right Click the empty space on the desktop%26gt; properties%26gt; settings. Choose a resolution where the little screen in the window is the same shape as your screen.

Some graphics cards overide windows resolution settings. You can tell this is the case because the settings will not change from windows settings. If so hover the mouse over the icons in the sys tray near the clock. One of the icons will be the graphics card. Right click it and follow your nose to sniff out how to alter the resolution.
    *facepalm*

Firstly, never unplug the computer, never do a system restore.

System restore is very buggy and doesn't always fix what you intend it to work.

Secondly, I hate you for still having XP professional. I'm on W7. It's terrible.

    Now to fix your problem.

    1: Go to your desktop

2: Right Click on the Desktop

    3: Click on properties

4: Go to the screen resolution tab near the top of the window

5: Change the screen size from 800x600 to something ideal like 1024x768

    6: Hit Apply and OK

If your screen flickers once or twice, then stays at 800x600 ... then chances are you have an issue with your hardware. Seeing as you pulled out your power supply, opening up your computer and changing components isn't an option.

The only relatively safe thing I can advise you to do next is update your drivers.

    1: Click the start menu

    2: Go to control panel

3: Under the View tab, change your view to classic start menu. The blue bar on the left lets you do this too if I remember correctly.

    4: Open Device Manager

5: Go to Display Adapters, and expand it until you see what the adapter is.

6: Right click on it, click Properties.

If it's working, that's good. Otherwise, I think there should be a troubleshooting option or some way to repair it. If not, I'm not sure what else you can do.

My brother has a compaq presario. I want to change the boot sequence on that machine, but?

After pressing F10, the screen displays 6 menus:

If you can get into the GRUB menu when you boot you should have the option of booting in verbose or some kind of ';safe'; mode. You should then be able to change the resolution. I didn't know how to do this when it happened to me and had to reinstall.

    Dear Jim,

Please note that attempting to change your Windows XP Bootscreen can cause system instability if it's not properly done.

I recommend downloading the free program ';Bootskin';. Search it on Google. It is a free program that allows you to choose a boot screen or make your own. It does all the technical stuff for you, and you can convert it back to the default if you are unsatisfied.

How to change date and time on a apple ibook g4?

My ibook won't boot past the gray screen. I went into the open firmware and I saw my ibook has the wrong date and time. It has 01/01/1904 for the date. Could the wrong date and time be why it will not boot past the gray screen? Can you change the date and time inside of firmware. I am new to apple I don't know much at all about it.How to change date and time on a apple ibook g4?
Incorrect date in open firmware is a reflection of a change in the setting but does not affect startup. The most common cause of fall back to 1904 is resetting the PMU. Did you do that for any power management issue recently? Oddly enough, I would suggest resetting it now. See the link below.

Hang at the grey screen with no Apple logo can be caused by a logic board fault (very slight chance of this), hard drive fault, or a UNIX base system fault. To eliminate a logic board fault as a possibility, reset the PMU, and then restart while holding the alt / option key for 30 seconds. If you get the Startup Manager screen (two large arrow icons), the board is likely fine. Next, put the OS X install DVD in, wait about ten seconds for it to spin up, and then click the curved arrow. When the DVD icon appears and the cursor returns to a normal arrow, click the DVD icon, and press Return. Go past the language choice, and open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select the hard drive at left. Select the ';First Aid'; tab. Click the ';Repair Disk'; button. Three paths to follow after that:

    * If it finds problems, and repairs, click the ';Repair Disk'; button again.

    * If it finds no problems, quit Disk Utility and move forward to click the ';Options'; button, and select ';Archive and Install'; (if there is enough available space on the drive) with a check / tick for ';Preserve Users and network settings';, or select ';Erase and install'; (if not enough available space).

    * If it finds problems, and cannot repair, either buy a more robust disk repair utility such as TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior, or quit Disk Utility, and go forward to click the ';Options'; button, and select ';Erase and install';.

  • My Computer is Stuck on Intel Boot Screen! How do I Fix?

I've had my computer for a while now its been working fine and yesterday it crashed and now when i boot it up it goes to the intel boot screen with the intel logo on the upper right side and the intel pentium inside in the lower right. I press delete to get to my BIOS but it gets stuck on entering setup. I searched for a while trying to find a fix and once i actually got to my BIOS but I'm not sure how. I changed my boot device order to what it said on the website which did fix it for a small amount of time. But now it is still broken and I can't get to safe mode even (it doesn't load far enough). So now I'm stuck and need a lot of help so I can get my computer back up and running again please help!My Computer is Stuck on Intel Boot Screen! How do I Fix?
Since I don't know the manufacturer of your PC, I will have to guess at this one. This sounds like either one of the DIMM(memory modules) or the actual CPU chip is defective or at least not installed correctly. An incorrectly installed memory module or processor can cause the system to still partially work, but freeze during boot. You may want to have an A+ or MSCE certified technician look at this. If the system was purchased through Best Buy, you should be able to take the system back to their Geek Squad guys and have them fix this issue. This is the ';best-case'; scenario. There is also the possibility that the processor chip (CPU) may even have a bent pin on either the base of the chip or in it's motherboard ZIF socket. This is the ';worst-case'; scenario. If this is the case, you may be looking at the purchase of another system. If so, have a certified A+ or MSCE tech remove the hard drive in your system and copy the contents of it to a DVD or USB flash drive so that you have not lost all of your data and can transfer this data to a new system. Without knowing further details on your system, like the manufacturer, which Intel Pentium version it is (ie. Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium 4 etc.) it is hard to tell help you pin down what the exact problem could be. Hopefully this helps though.

When playing COD4 online, can you change your screen name?? How?????

I've grown weary of my screen name when playing the game online and want to change it. How do you go about changing it?? Is it done in account management??

I know how to change clan tags, but not the screen name itself.

I have also been told that if you change your screen name, you have to start all over. Is this true??

Example: If you were on your 5th prestige level, and changed your screen name, you'd be sent all the way back to Level 1 boot camp. This cant be true, or is it??When playing COD4 online, can you change your screen name?? How?????
Yeah, you literally have to start a fresh user to have a new name, as far as I know - so for, PS3, you have to lose everything. I started a new one just before GTA4 for that very reason; next time you get a new game, start a new one, then you can use a new user for that game every time. When playing COD4 online, can you change your screen name?? Windows XP Boot issue?

When I first start my computer it goes to a dual boot type screen. The default setting is set at start up disk(I don't have Cd in the drive). The second boot is for normal WIndows XP. My computer will run fine if I click the Windows XP boot option. But it is really annoying I have to sit in front of computer and select the option when it comes up otherwise it goes to setup(cd) and blue screen. Can I change that boot selections some how??I want the default to be WIndows XP.

    Windows XP Boot issue?
Go to your BIOS settings hitting the f2 key repeatedly before Windows boots. You'll see a text screen look for ';boot sequence'; or ';boot order'; and make the boot order 1. Hard drive 2. CD/DVD 3. Floppy. Then hit the designated key that will ';Save and Exit';. If it doesn't boot to windows right away, hit the reset button on the front of the computer.Windows XP Boot issue?
When your computer is starting up, tap F12. Once you get into the Boot Menu, go to the option ';Boot Sequence'; or something like that. You can change your boot sequence to start with the hard drive and it will automatically scan the hard drive for an OS (operating system) first, if it finds nothing, then it will scan the other places ex. your cd rom disk drive.
You can change your boot sequence in the file c:\boot.ini

You can edit this file with notepad.
    go to

    start

    control panel

    system

    hit the tab thats reads ';advanced';

on startup and recovery click on settings

click on edit startup options file manually

something like this is going pop up

    [boot loader]

    timeout=20

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti?br>
    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI?Windows XP Professional'; /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WI?Windows 2000 Professional'; /FASTDETECT

    just switch the order

    for example

    [boot loader]

    timeout=20

    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partiti?br>
    [operating systems]

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WI?Windows 2000 Professional'; /FASTDETECT

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WI?Windows XP Professional'; /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

then save and you are done.

Installing Windows XP after Linux Ubuntu, how can I change the bootloader to get a boot choice GRUB screen ...

The problem that I am having is that I had first installed windows XP then Linux Ubuntu and had the GRUB bootloader pop up when I started the computer and could choose my boot options hda1 for WinXP and hda2 for Ubuntu. I however have recently wiped out Win XP and re-installed it. Now Win XP automatically boots. My guess is that somehow the NTLDR or whatever it is is that Windows boots from has taken precidence. I however want to change back to the GRUB and have it take precidence to give me that choice of which OS to load. Right now both OS's seems stable but I can not get directly into the Linux, (but an access the HD using a Linux MEPIS CD). Could someone tell me which file to edit and what to put in it, (and where to put it if need be), to get my nice little GRUB back? I have been doing some reading on it and it is a very broad topic and I have not found any explicit tutorials without having to make a boot disk, (which I will do if I have to), but it is complex. Another way?Installing Windows XP after Linux Ubuntu, how can I change the bootloader to get a boot choice GRUB screen ...
Re-install your Linux and it should automatically detect that a Windows installation is present and prompt you to set up grub as the default boot loader instead of going directly to the Windows boot.

Windows does not recognize that there is any such thing as Linux or a EXT2 or EXT3 partition or even a Linux swap partition therefor Windows will always try to take over everything.

(It is Microsoft's adle minded way of ignoring the existence of Linux and open source in a childish attempt to create incompatibility).

Linux on the other hand does not ignore Windows or FAT, FAT32 or NTFS partitions.

    Addendem,

Yes, you are going to have to use a Linux boot disk or boot cd because Windows will not allow you to access the Linux partition and Windows will always boot first.

Yes, it can be done since it is obviously done during the automated installation process of Linux.

Personally I don't know any way to do what you are asking.

The only way I presently know is to install grub and set it to take over the boot handeling functions is to set it up on the Linux installation.

However here is a link to a grub manual installation guide and I will have to try it myself just for fun.

http://orgs.man.ac.uk/documentation/grubInstalling Windows XP after Linux Ubuntu, how can I change the bootloader to get a boot choice GRUB screen ...
You can try this alternative, although i'm not sure about ubuntu though:

    1. Boot from Ubuntu install cd and boot into rescue mode/command line mode. You can check the help once the install cd boots up and shows you the list of options. Another option is to boot up the livecd and start a root shell. The purpose is to get a shell (command line) with root privileges.

    2. At the command line type 'grub-install --recheck /dev/hda'. This will reinstall GRUB into your hard drive's MBR.

    3. Reboot and grub will load. If your linux entry is missing somehow, press escape and you'll be at the command line. Then follow this guide [1].

    4. If your windows entry is missing, add the following lines _after_ booting into your linux to /boot/grub/grub.conf at the end:

    title Windows XP Professional

    rootnoverify (hd0,1)

    chainloader +1

    boot

Replace (hd0,1) with your hard drive. Remember the numbering in grub starts with 0 so hd0,1 is, in your case hda2. Therefore you'll have to write (hd0,0) for hda1.

Hope that helps. If this does not work, there still is another (tedious) method. Post a message if it does not.

Sure thing. You're referring to the ';USplash'; package which lets GRUB boot using a splash screen in order to cover up all the techno-gobble Linux normally prints to screen while loading.

You can read more about modifying the USplash settings at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/USplas

If you're shy about using the command-line to alter USplash (which that link above talks about doing), you can go into Synaptic and search for / install a package called ';Startup Manager'; (aka: SUM). SUM lets you modify GRUB, GRUB2 %26amp; USplash via GUI (graphical user interface) within Ubuntu. Refer to this link for more info ...

    http://www.ubuntugeek.com/startup-manage

If you're wondering why SUM isn't installed in Ubuntu by default, it's because it gives you the ability to change critical values in your system. If you don't know what you're doing, SUM can make it very easy to shoot yourself in the foot. I only recommend messing with USplash, GRUB, SUM, etc if you're a power-user. IE: I don't recommend you install SUM and let your non-technical grandma, parents, et.al. start messing with it. They could do more harm than good.

You need to update the driver. Find your driver and download it.

Pop in the drive and choose to exit the launch pad or close it out if it auto starts.

Bottom of the screen find the box with the green arrow and double click it and choose the properties of the card and update the driver. You can try to roll back the drivers first if you want.

How to change dual boot system?

I have the following three operating systems on my computer:

    1) Windows XP

    2) Windows 7

    3) Suse (Linux)

    Order of installation:

    XP%26gt;Win 7%26gt; Suse

When I had installed Win7, the boot screen would give me option to choose from XP and Win7. After installing Suse, it took over the boot system, and displays a linux-like boot screen, allowing me to choose from Suse (default), Win7, and XP.

I want to change this booting system offered by Suse, and switch back to Windows' boot system. i.e. the interface would change. The reason for wanting this, is that under My computer properties%26gt;system recovery, nothing shows up in the boot menu.

Any help? How to change dual boot system?

How do i get to bios on my computer to boot from disk that is in a cd drive?

I have a computer that has no processor screen during boot up. How do i activate my bios screen to change my version of windows? How do i get to bios on my computer to boot from disk that is in a cd drive?
Different computer makes/models use different keys to access the BIOS, but some of the common keys are Del, F1, and F2 (For example, Dell computers usually use F2).

Start tapping one of those keys immediately after you boot/reboot the computer to get to the BIOS setup pages. Within those pages there should be a ';boot order'; or ';boot device order'; section where you can *permanently* set the boot order.

Your computer may also have an option to set the boot device order *temporarily*; just for that particular boot. Again, the access key varies; on most Dell computers the key is F12.How do i get to bios on my computer to boot from disk that is in a cd drive?
when you turn ur computer on press alt, control and delete and keep taping F8 . This will bring BIOS up on this i think its the end menu it will be called boot, on this go to further settings then make the top choice boot from cd drive
The BIOS is Del, F1, F10 or some other key, depending on the manufacturer. Try those first. (F8 is the Windows boot menu - you want the BIOS.) Then look for Boot Order.

That's very difficult, if impossible. You shouldn't care about that.
    try this
How you change it, I'm not sure but you can get rid of it.

Press the Windows key and Pause Break together to bring up System Properties. Click the advanced tab and under Start up and recovery, click settings.Click the Edit button. In the notepad window that appears, type /sos at the end of the last line with a single space so that it reads

    . . . /fastdetect /sos

    Click File and then save.

If you want to restore the Windows logo , remove /sos and resave the file.
I dont think you can if you want to change what is say like Windows Xp you need to get a different program if you dont want that anymore

How do I get my HP Laptop to get past the start up screen?

Here's the problem: When I turn my laptop on, the HP invent start up screen comes up. On the bottom of the screen it says to press ESC to change boot order and press F2 to enter setup, F12 to boot from LAN. It won't go past this screen. When I push ESC, F2, or F12 it does nothing... It stays on the start up screen. I've asked a friend or two and they think that the hard drive may be fried. What do you think? How do I get my HP Laptop to get past the start up screen?
Well its either the board or hard drive. But hard drives dont necessarily will freeze after the boot screen. Motherboards will. To verify if the hard drive is bad is to undo the harddrive caddy and remove it then boot the PC. It will boot up and then say hard disk 0 not found then it will mean the motherboard works but the hard drive was bad. BUT only try that if its NOT UNDER WARRANTY. If you still have a warranty let HP to all the grunt work and troubleshooting.

Sounds to me the board is bad.How do I get my HP Laptop to get past the start up screen?
Probably a problem with the motherboard or bios. It sounds like you need to call or email HP and get them to replace/fix your computer.
It sounds like it is locking up at that point. Can you see the hard drive light flashing when you hit one of the keys? If not it is locked up. It may be getting a bad command at that point and could need to have windows reloaded. You might try hitting the F7 or the F9 or the F11 keys while it is booting up from the time you first turn it on. I might let you do a restore point if there are any set. If that is a no go you will need to boot from a cd and reinstall the whole thing. But being the computer is booting to the startup screen the HD is working. So see if you can get a new install init.

When Windows Xp boots, there two files involved, Boot-loader and Boot.ini . one will tell widows where to find the operating system and the other will load your configuration your user name included, both files are well known for being corrupted therefore your windows will hang up at the welcome screen. Two things you may wanna do to help you solve this problem

-try to restart your computer, on at the welcom screen, insert a windows XP CD rom if you do have one, let it run for 5 minutes, remove the CD the reboot your computer again that will fix the corrupted file.

How to Change the Screen Resolution on a recently Re-booted Windows Xp Home Edition?

The title essentially says it all. Recently i had to Re-boot my computer and start fresh due to some vicious malware. Before, i was able to change the resolution from 1024x768 all the way to 600x480 with all color quality options available. Now, the slider for screen resolution is not present and only has one setting which is 640X480 with 16bit. So i looked this up on google and found that if i were to go through Advanced%26gt;Adapter%26gt;List All Modes i could manually change it there. However, when i do so (using 800x600 and the default refresh mode) i end up with only 8bits on the color quality and that looks like total ****. So how can I make the slider present or change my resolution with better color quality, more than 8?How to Change the Screen Resolution on a recently Re-booted Windows Xp Home Edition?

Firstly, more fool you for getting Vista as I suspect that your laptop will not have the resources to run even a moderately complicated game.

If you computer has built in graphics then check the manufacturers website for new drivers (that goes for added graphics cards like Nvidia %26amp; ATI as well). You can also check what your native resolution should be.

You can do a certain amount of screen modification through the control panel on there may be a ';config'; setup for the game itself in which you can change it's properties.

With Vista to run a high end graphics programme you should have 2Gbs of RAM and at least a 256Mb Graphics card even for Vista basic so check your specs. If all else fails get a cheap copy of XP!

It is impossible to change your boots screen to a flash animation. Unless you can somehow get your CMOS to have the flash player loaded into it.I want to change everything in windows.. how can i do that?
if you really want to change everything, install Ubuntu.
Hmmm... A completely customized OS where you檙e in control of everything including your own custom flash boot screens, etc. Sounds like LINUX to me. I doubt you'll mind the rock solid stability, thousands of good free applications, and better internet and network performance either. Oh yeah, and then there檚 the fact that it's open source so you can edit EVERYTHING with control over even the most minute details.

Windows does not support custom boot screens and does not lend itself well to customization of any kind. They have a bunch of pre-cooked appearances you can choose from but I would not really call them custom. That being said, you can do this with bootskin which is a third party Windows application designed for this purpose. Look for links below

That's not ';building an OS,'; that's just re-skinning a pre-existing OS with your own graphics. If you try to do this with Windows then expect some very high-powered lawyers to knocking on your door in no time flat. If you do this with an open-source OS then you should pay VERY close attention to the license on every component of the OS you choose. You don't say if you're doing this project for fun or for money, so I'll assume you just want a project to tinker with. However, if you ask for a penny for this ';new'; OS and aren't *extremely* up front about the real components that you used then you're going to have thousands of annoyed open-source coders screaming for your head on a platter and high-powered lawyers from the EFF pretty much destroying you in court.

Change boot resolution or adjust frequency to resolve Out of range issue?

    Hello!

I have Windows XP and an old ATI Radeon 9000 video card. I also have this LCD monitor.

They used to work just fine, but from a month or so, when I boot (or even just before the booting starts) I get an ';Out of range'; message from my monitor, and the the V frequency is 49.x Hz but never 50 (I found out that if it's below or 50 it is OK). Also, the monitor reports that the screen resolution is 800 x 600.

I can't see anything else until Windows loads (when frequency is below 60 Hz). Just sometimes it gets below 50 and I can go into BIOS or the Windows boot menu.

My question is how can I force another resolution during booting, in order to increase the frequency.

(P.S.: I already tried starting Windows in VGA mode, starting in safe mode etc. - actually even is safe modes it looks like it is a 800x600 although Windows reports that is 640x480 - the image is stretched down and it is more clear than it would have been in 640x480 as I can tell)

This is where you can fin d the relevant softwares.

I have been using installous to download apps for quite a while now, and about a week ago, im not sure what happened to it, but every time i boot up installous, the boot-up screen doesnt show the installous logo and original boot-up screen, it shows a screenshot of the downloads page with a download in it. Try this simple way, go to your friend's computer (with XP) and copy a file named ';ntoskrnl.exe'; (C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntoskrnl.exe). Once you copied the file, go to your machine and replace yours with it. (go to C:\Windows\System32, copy and paste the file inside the directory)

i have a laptop. i use the screen, and i also have it hooked up to my tv. when i turn my laptop on, it automatically sticks the boot-up on the tv even if it's off. if there is anything wrong or a message pops up during boot-up, i wouldn't know until i turn my tv on 5 minutes later wondering what's going on. is there a way to change which screen boot up comes up on. i tried in Startup and Recovery under Advanced/System Properties, there is no option. i'm using Windows 7 btw, almost same as vista so vista suggestions should be good enough. How do i change which monitor boot-up shows up on(Dual Monitors)?
It has to be done in bios if it's possible at all, Windows will have no control over it.How do i change which monitor boot-up shows up on(Dual Monitors)?
It should show up on your primary monitor. If you go into your display options, you should be able to set one monitor up as ';1'; and the other up as ';2'; and/or dictate which should be the primary monitor. Look for one or both of those options and try switching them around and rebooting, one at a time.

Windows vista boot and Log in screen customization?

Hi i have recently seen a way that i can change my booting and log in screen in windows vista using a program called TuneUp Utilities and i have some questions

1:if i change my boot and log in screen can i restore it back without reinstalling windows and how ?

2:is this program safe to use cause i know that messing with windows system is not something good to do and if it has any side effects( like slowing down computers performance)

3:if i change my boot screen and log in screen and delete the program the settings will still work?

Thanks in advance for the helpWindows vista boot and Log in screen customization?
I've been using that same program. Personally, it seems like the custom boot screens slow my computer down a little bit. But the program overall is safe, and to change the boot screen back to normal all you do is select the default one at the same place you selected your custom one

How do I get rid of my old boot screen?

Ok, so a while back i got bored of seeing the same of windows xp boot screen and i downloaded a program that let me change my boot screen, i found 1 on the internet that i liked and downloaded it and used the program to implement it. since then i have removed the program and dont remember what it is called, but the boot screen stays the same. it hasnt bothered me until today when i installed TuneUp utilities 2009 and tried to change my boot screen. when I attempt to change the boot screen using tune up it says that the boot screen i selected is 'active'. so i restart my computer to find that the boot screen is still stuck on the old one that i dont know how to remove, any help with this issue will be greatly appreciatedHow do I get rid of my old boot screen?
    It is possible to do this, actually there are several ways to do this, but they all involve modifying the Windows boot.ini file and using an application that will assist in modifying the image that loads. I've provided several links that explain this process;

That boot screen is a file of some type on your computer (mostly likely a bmp file). Find the file and rename it so that Windows will not be able to find it on the next bootup and it should revert to the default screen for you.
