How do I fix this boot error on Windows XP (missing hal.dll and a missing partition)?

I use a partitioned disk drive, both with Windows XP Professional. I mainly use the H:\ drive. I got a virus and the H:\ drive got infected. I restarted, and learned that I was missing hal.dll. So, now I'm using my C:\ drive and I cannot access my H:\ drive. It simply says that it's a removable disk drive ( NTFS). However, I can still see the files I made on the H:\ drive and put on the C:\ drive, so they were connected at some point. I used the Windows XP Professional installation CD and got to the recovery console, and went through it all. I tried a command to expand the hal.dl file, but it seems that D:\ isn't my disk drive. I have tried every letter of the alphabet, and it still won't work. Also, the only disk drive I could select to restore was the C:\ drive. My H:\ drive wasn't there. I do not want to lose the data on the H:\ drive, but I want to be able to use it again. What happened to my H:\ drive? On the OS selection menu when I start the computer up, it's still there, but I just can't boot it up due to the missing hal.dll. I do not want to buy any CDs/programs and I do not need answers from advertisers of those CDs/programs. Otherwise, I'll take any suggestions.

Now... I checked out disk management. I have found my partition, but it is now an EISA configuration drive and it has no name. I can't do anything with it at all. Is there any way for me to access it?

One more thing: I do NOT need registry cleaners or dll files. I can't access the drive, and therefore I cannot place the files on it. I only need to learn how to access the drive.

If all else fails, then could anybody help me fix this annoying screen issue? On my H: drive, the screen was normal. I use a wide screen monitor, and it was perfectly proportioned. However, on the C: drive, everything on the screen is stretched very slightly. For example, this symbol here: 鈼? used to appear completely round to me. Now, it looks like an oval. The stretch isn't much, but it adds up and is somewhat annoying. Changing the screen resolution didn't help fix it.How do I fix this boot error on Windows XP (missing hal.dll and a missing partition)?
So...now, can you access any data on drive H:??

If you're still able to access the data on it. BACKUP the data soon.

Once you're sure you have all your data in drive H: then format it, recreate the partition then install XP on that if you want or stick with XP on C: drive.

About screen, try to take a look on additional display utilities that might be installed when you installed your display driver.

The utility usually comes with more advanced display configuration. Maybe you can fix your screen problem from there. ( Eg: intel onboard comes with additional tool to rotate screen, stretch it, etc )

Need help with changing my welcome screen on Windows XP?

I've heard that you can change the ';background'; on your ';welcome'; screen. You know, the screen that appears when you boot up Windows? Well, I already have a background selected, but don't know how to put it on ( ~therefore replacing the original Windows welcome screen~ ). I have ';WinRAR';, if you know what it is. The replacement background for my welcome screen is apparently a ';RAR'; file and I think needs to be extracted to a location to get it to work and show up... Do you know what location I need to send my ';welcome screen background'; to? Thanks for all of your help %26amp; please only answer this question IF you KNOW how to do this!Need help with changing my welcome screen on Windows XP?
Your question is a little unclear. The Windows Welcome screen is the screen with the accounts with the little icons. You can't change that background.

The Windows XP BOOTING screen can be changed. That's can be done by reading the guide here:

If you have two monitors and use analog/digital input to switch computers, try going to the digital input to make sure your main monitor display didnt change.Windows Vista goes to black screen after boot.Whats the deal?!?
Have you tried 'last known good configuration?'...
If you have a Vista dvd, boot from it and do a system repair and it will fix your system.
You're running Vista... Format and reinstall Windows XP... sorry I just couldn't resist. It's really hard to tell without getting more information, but it sounds like something is corrupted. If you have a spare drive try reinstalling on that spare drive and trying to boot from that, if it boots, it's software, if not it is probably hardware.

  • Help with Installing Windows , while having blue screen of death?

I have the blue screen of death. i am reinstalling the Windows XP disc , i have gone on to BIOS and changed to boot by CD , and its still doing the same thing , it asks me to load up windows normally or to Load the last known configuration and with the safemodes. after this screen it begins to load up windows then almost immediatley restarts the whole computer. please could somebody tell me how i can reinstall or just repair this problem.Help with Installing Windows , while having blue screen of death?
A computer's registry is one big database that has numerous files, options, and settings. These settings and options keep changing with every second of you using your PC and can lead to the damage of some of these settings. This causes errors to show up and the computer to have a BSOD. Registry cleaners http://make-computer-run-smoothly.com software scan the computer's errors and matches all files and settings with the applications that use them. If it identifies any file or setting to be damaged, missing, or corrupted, it provides you with an updated list of the same and also repairs these errors. Therefore, if your computer keeps crashing and need to fix blue screen of death a good registry cleaner is all you need. Your computer can also cause problems because of redundant files in its registry. Registry cleaners identify all these redundant and junk files that were left over during the uninstalling process of hardware of software and delete them. This makes sure that the ';computer keeps having the BSOD'; issue is taken care of.Help with Installing Windows , while having blue screen of death?
Let the windows cd start up and choose the ';R'; option for repair. Somehow you have to get to the windows disk menu. Safe mode may help but I doubt it.

How can i shorten winxp boot's ';detect networks'; process which applies after i get my desktop screen?

after winxp boots, desktop screen opens but nothing works until this ';detect networks'; thing is over, hdd light is not on during this process,i guess it has a timeout value, normal xp startup programs start to load after this process, it takes like 1-2 minutes, i wanna change its timeout value. How can i shorten winxp boot's ';detect networks'; process which applies after i get my desktop screen?
You may want to try disabling it all together, and then just search for networks after the computer has started up and booted properly, or just get new RAM, you may not have a sufficient amount. However, I do believe disabling is the better idea, and then just manually searching for networks after boot process. How can i shorten winxp boot's ';detect networks'; process which applies after i get my desktop screen?
First of all, go to ';Run'; and type ';msconfig'; and click ';OK';. Go to the ';Startup'; Tab and select ';Disable All';. Note: this only applies if you have Administrative Privileges. Once you click ';Apply'; or ';OK';, reboot and see if that works

Windows XP won't boot... black screen. Help?

Okay, I reinstalled Windows XP on my family computer. So, all was running fine, until I booted it up one time and everything was in the color blue, instead of the actual colors. I thought this might be a one time thing, so I restarted the computer. The same thing happened. I went into the properties and tried to change the color and resolution but it wouldn't let me (and yes, the correct driver was installed for the card). After yelling at my computer, I shut it off. Then, about an hour or so later, I tried to boot up Windows XP once more. But this time, the computer boots the BIOS and the loader, but when I choose to boot Windows XP Professional, a black screen is displayed. To back up my files (important MS Word Documents), I used a LiveCD of Ubuntu 9.04 and a USB flash drive. But, when I tried to mount the volume in which Windows XP was on, it gave me an error, and told me to run CHKDSK, but if Windows can't boot, how am I supposed to do that! Also, when I tried to boot the Windows XP disc to do a repair, it would also give me a black screen once I hit a key to boot from the CD. I tried booting both of my Windows XP CD's (WinXP SP3 and WinXP SP2), and still no luck. Anyways, I'm done rambling on. Does anybody think they have a cure for this? Thank you all!Windows XP won't boot... black screen. Help?
Hard drives goes bad. Once it does, and if it is only half alive, it will go into mode where it registers itself as such and such harddrive, but when programs try to access any data, it will hang... It sounds like this is the case. You need to get new hard drive.

That boot up screen is called the usplash. It's probably a problem with your graphics card, but I'm not sure. Did you edit your /boot/grub/ment.lst ? If so, you may have accidentally removed the code that loads it.

For your second question, download a theme like this one

    http://art.gnome.org/download/themes/met

then open up the theme manager (System%26gt;Preferences%26gt;Theme)

and drag the file from your desktop to the theme window. I've never tried, but I think that's how you do it.

If your graphics card supports compiz fusion then use it. Also get emerald theme manager, its themes are pretty cool!

My Firefox boomarks sidebar has changed from full-screen to half screen length... Why/how?

My bookmarks bar has always been full length of the screen with a scroll bar to the right. A few minuted ago when I clicked on the bookmarks button (the star in the top left) the sidebar is now half the length (still has a scrollbar down the right hand side).

This has happened once before and at the next boot-up it was back to a full length screen bar.

Since I haven't altered any options, and have been just surfing a regular news site today, what has happened, and why???My Firefox boomarks sidebar has changed from full-screen to half screen length... Why/how?
I think what you are seeing is the Tabs. You can have multible webpages running at once...each website will have it's own tab. You can close each tab by clicking on the X just to the right of the ';star'; or other...depending on what that page displays.

How do I properly partition my hard drive so I can dual boot Ubuntu and WinXP?

I've got an FAQ that tells step by step what to do. I choose the partition and then set the size, but then it always goes back to the screen with the partitions without my changes showing. I'm using the FAQ here:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com//WindowsDualBoot

I get stuck at sub-step 5 under main step 7. After it says, ';It may take some time to apply the changes'; the screen almost immediately goes back to the screen where it shows the partitions.

Does anyone have a clue? Or another URL with more help? How do I properly partition my hard drive so I can dual boot Ubuntu and WinXP?
According to the website Ubuntu has issues with resizing NTFS file system which is the file system of XP. There is a secondary procedure listed, have you tried that? And if you have already tried that and have no other options you can use partition magic. I used partition magic many times for my dual boot systems and it works great. It does have a $70 price tag though.

    Windows Wont Boot?

OK my mom is having the same problem with her computer as i did with mine months ago. Windows screen starts then a black screen giving options like safe mode, normal and stuff like that , tried all the options . Then it just keeps repeating itself. Tried doing the F8 or F10 i cant remember . at start up to change boot from disk and everything , still no luck. She has a windows CD but it is a upgrade and when installed says there isnt a previous version of windows on the computer.

I have fixed mine but i spent weeks getting it back and im not sure how i did it. I do know i had to redo everything. Even the Backup CDs i made in case of a crash didnt work. If it is a virus not sure how i could have got it, my mom doesnt get on the internet hardly ever. She just plays card games . The only thing i can think of that happening is a niece comes over once in a while and maybe she did it.

We Both Have latset NORTON and everthing updated.Windows Wont Boot?
go into safe mode and run msconfig

in the startup tab disable all

    then reboot

the original problem is usually a hang up in a program that has asked you to reboot now? and you said yes. always select later and reboot it yourself.

after you get it stable run msconfig and select all

    then do this:

Download and run superantispyware. I was put onto this program because of an annoying popup

    http://www.superantispyware.com

afterwards clean up the registry with this

    Clean up pc and IE

    ==============

To clean up run this Microsoft檚 windows live program. It does registry, spyware , virus , disk clean up and defrag

it takes 2 hours or more so once it starts to scan (go to bed etc)

    XP Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/defau

    Vista Users http://onecare.live.com/site/en-ca/cente

Run the full scanner, then at the end of the scan it asks you to set it running full time.

Think twice about setting it to run in the background as it could be another thing to slow you down. However, it may be worth while if you have no other security programs running.

I personally run Norton 360 which is full internet security and run superantispyware when I want to.

So if you don檛 have a decent internet security program then perhaps run the superantispyware with your antivirus.

If you sick of antivirus programs that don檛 work perhaps run onecare full time and run superantispyware whenever.

update your norton to norton 360 you need full internet security these daysWindows Wont Boot?
You found your way to the options. Choose this one - ';Last Known Working Configuration';. That should sort out your problem. If not choose 'safe mode' and once in safe mode do the following: Click Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Restore. Once in system restore choose a day you know your PC was working correctly. Follow the instructions carefully.

    Hope you come right.

How to format hard drive after dodgy dual-boot xp-xp install - ubuntu-overlord help!?

OK, I've made a right mess now... Trying to get a couple of small (4gb) partitions on beginning of hard disk... doesn't have to be RIGHT at start - after the ';Invisible'; XP partition is fine as long as C: is the install drive as far is user can see.

So I've ended up with a weird XP-XP dual boot with 3 partitions showing up...

Am now trying to get back to the initial partitioning screen just before telling XP to install... I want to be in same situation I'd be in as if I had just plugged in a new HDD.

The options I have in my tiny mind all involve a boot disk so I can run ';format c:'; from a c prompt - I have no floppy, my DVD is read only and I've got no cd's to write to... lol. Would try to boot from my usb stick but bios has no usb option in boot sequence

No matter how I change boot sequence, I can't get the machine to think it's starting from scratch...

Have considered tazering the HD to make sure it has no chance of booting but don't have a tazer...

All good fun :)How to format hard drive after dodgy dual-boot xp-xp install - ubuntu-overlord help!?
if the old h/d was originally in the computer your working yes it will work the way you want i.e. boot on the old h/d then reformat the new drive. the only thing you'll need to do is look on the end of the h/d where the cables plug in you'll see the place for the ribbon cable and the place for the 4 pin power cable there will be another place there with pins about the size of the ribbon cable but only 6 or 8 there should be a jumper present on 2 of them look on the h/d there should be a label telling you where the jumper needs to be for master, slave and cable select. the old drive should have it's jumper set on master and the one you want to format should be set on slave. sorry if i was preaching to the choir but i don't know what you know about swapping h/ds and setting up drives in a computer.the other day some one just told a questioner in your situation to set the jumpers master and slave and right above it the same questioner ask what and where are jumper and how to set them. hope i gave you enough info. working inside a computer is childs play after you've done a few and some of us answerers assume the questioner has more knowledge than they do.How to format hard drive after dodgy dual-boot xp-xp install - ubuntu-overlord help!?
i think you need an xp install cd to mess with the partitions if you dont have access to a floppy
Boot in safe mode and go to a command prompt:

    fixmbr

This will rewrite your boot sector file and hopefull you will be cack to where you started - minus the Ubuntu cockup.

You can use Windows Disk management to remove the partitions.

How can I stop my computer asking me which version of Windows XP I wish to load?

I downloaded and installed Stardock's Bootskin app (a program that basically allows you to change to Windows boot image), but wasn't particularly impressed with the results,so I ended up uninstalling it again and thus, re inverting to the original Windows XP boot up screen again. However, sense then the boot screen asks whether I want to Run

2.) Windows XP Home Edition (Original).

    You have 30 seconds... etc.

Both run identically, or least as far as I can tell, and it's an irritating slowdown to the startup. Any help? How can I stop my computer asking me which version of Windows XP I wish to load?
Right click on the 'my computer' icon and open properties

    click on 'advanced' tab.

click on 'settings' button in the startup and recovery column.

In the new window, click on the edit button

In the text file opened, delete the whole line containing the title you want to remove ie Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Home Edition(original).the line will be under the text [operating sustems] (generally the line is ';multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WIN?Windows XP Professional'; /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    ';)

    and save the change.

If the above does not work, do a system format to the date before the date of installing the Stardock's Bootskin app.How can I stop my computer asking me which version of Windows XP I wish to load?
from the sounds of things you cant stop it from doin it my only solution is that you save everything that you need onto a pn drive or somethin re-format your hard drive and einstall windows xp that should get rid of the problem but its alot of messin about after youve done it though you can just put your saved stuff back on no problem.

Try booting again and go in to BIOS and see if the hard drive is being detected as well as the cd drive, and on the boot menu make your hard drive the first boot. Then '; exit saving changes';. Just wear sandals instead.
check if there is a loose connection with the monitor cable. maybe it went loose. or if your monitor is connected to a video card, check if the video card is loose and is physically installed properly.
    Hi,

You need to access your setup screen. As your machine boots you will see something like ';press ';Del'; to access set up. what ever it is you need to press that while your computer is starting to boot. Once in that screen select your CD/DVD as 1st boot devise and your hard drive as 2nd start up devise. If it will not show your hard drive, you will find an place there to search for a hard drive. use it to locate your drive.

If you still can not boot, remove one of your RAM sticks and try again. If it still will not boot try the other stick.
I know your system running slow due to windows registry files and invalid entries. If your PC is slow moving and crashed by the invalid entries then you have to download registry easy because these bad entries are most likely caused by new fixings of new hardware ?such as printers, scanners, webcams etc. Install or uninstall programs can make your windows registry confusion. Even if the registry appears to be fine, you can spontaneous 0x00000000 errors just by having diverse strategy interfering through each other. Pretentious you檝e installed a new hardware device before error, go back and uninstall it totally. Now run a system scan corrupt registry entries. You can download registry cleaner to remove these error.
I dont know if you know something about hardware if you do,try to check the cable which connect the HD to the mother board, chamber settings,HD power cable. After this go to setup to boot sequence and boot from Hard-Disk(HD).Or restart the computer and remove installation disk press and hold f12 boot device menu will appear and boot from HD drive c:
It's probably the new memory stick you installed.Take it out and restart your computer.Hopefully that will solve your problem.

How can I restore my PC and make it work if it displays ';FREQUENCY OUT OF RANGE: Please change resolution';?

When I restart the PC, it will still work fine and will load all the drivers. I am using Windows XP and will load untill you see the Windows XP animation during the loading process. After that it will just switch to black screen with the pop-up message saying Frequency out of range: please change resolution.

How will I be able to do that if it is not completely loading. All i am seeing is the startup/boot screen? How can I restore my PC and make it work if it displays ';FREQUENCY OUT OF RANGE: Please change resolution';?
It's Probably the Monitor you are using, or the Video Card. You can Try F8 while booting to go into safe mode. Try changing your resolution through there and see what happens. The monitor is what's reporting the Frequency out of range error... Not the computer... If Safemode does not work, Try either using a different monitor.... Or if it worked previously.... Use the System Restore function in Safemode..How can I restore my PC and make it work if it displays ';FREQUENCY OUT OF RANGE: Please change resolution';?
right click in the desktop and click on the settings tab and change the resolution to a lower one...... its on a scroll box that you click and the menu drops down.. its right by the colors
you need to start in safe mode and readjust your video settings. someone set the frequency too high for your monitor to handle. To get to safe mode tap F8 when you first poer on the pc (just keep tapping it over and over). When you get a list of options pick safe mode. log into your account and change them. I'm assuming you changed from a CRT to an LCD recently?

Dual Boot options to Normal Boot, how to change back?

I was recently given an old laptop to do experiments on, more or less. Right now, it has a screen that offers two Operating System options Windows XP and Windows NT. How do I get rid of the second option?Dual Boot options to Normal Boot, how to change back?
There's nothing wrong with having two OS's on a single hard drive. All you really risk is drive space.

The boot.ini option shown will remove the line, but it won't remove the additional operating system. If that is going to be your ultimate goal, then you can quite easily delete that partition using the disk management tool in Computer Management.

Just be careful how you do it, as the older OS is usually loaded as the first OS to ensure you have all available OS's listed and working (oldest to newest is the recommended installation order) so know for certain which partition you are clearing.Dual Boot options to Normal Boot, how to change back?
Go to the boot.ini on the root of the C:\ (it will be hidden) and in the boot.ini file delete the line that contains the information for the OS you do not want.
You cant get rid of it permanently. There are people who stupidly place two Operating systems on one computer. If you have two operating systems, then you will basically have a half working hard drive.

You will need to reformat and use the partitioning method to delete those two partitions and create ONE hard drive so you can install ONE Operating system. If you want a clean operating system, I suggest you reformat.

If you dont mind the two operating systems, but hate the dual boot, then just follow this link:

    http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread3955
    thats rather tricky...

    a simple fix is:

    right click My Computer

    Properties

    go to Advanced

go to startup and recovery options

    choose default operating system,

uncheck time to display OS choices

restart and test to see if it worked :)

  • How do I get my computer to boot?

My computer has been working fine, until recently, say the past week, I turn it on, use it for a while and then it would turn itself off. It's not connected to the internet so I didn't think it could be a virus.

However I tried to turn it on yesterday and it wouldn't even get to load all the way before it turned itself off. Now when I turn it on it shows the acer screen as it should, then beeps as it should and then I get a message which says:

    Invalid BOOT.INI file

    Booting from C:\windows\

I have been on other forums and seen that many answers say they either need a disk to boot it from (which I don't have) or that they need to change the BOOT thing but I can't do that because my computer won't load. It will just sit at the Invalid BOOT.INI screen for hours.

I'm hoping there is a way I could fix this problem without having to spend a lot of money.

    Thanks

Oh and my computer runs on Windows XP home edition. How do I get my computer to boot?
Borrow a Win XP home CD from a friend. Use the Recovery consol and at the C prompt type ';fixboot'; without the quotes.

wdwHow do I get my computer to boot?
Ok! This is a bit complex! First of all, if possible try to get a copy of the boot disk for the formatting purpose. This you can generally find on torrents I suppose. Else, try logging into Safe mode pressing F8 key as soon as you see the acer screen and try to recover the previous settings . I just have this much amount of information. :( Hope this helps.
try reinstalling / repair using win xp.

How can I fix my computer?(won't boot past the Post screen & can't access BIOS)?

OKAY.. I think this Question is DETAILED enough..since my last one wasn't. if you don't wanna read all this..there is a very fast explanation on the very bottom of this ';novel'; titled ';Short and to the Point';.

    PC Story/symptoms:

I was getting the ';nvlddmkm'; error along with the ';Display adapter crash'; error a few days ago. I called the manufacturer of my Graphics card and they sent me an e-mail along with trouble shooting remedies. I tried all the remedies they sent me and nothing seemed to work. So i took out my Graphics card and thats when i ran into problems. My PC will now not boot correctly. Can't enter BIOS or Safe modes. It is not due to a virus either(already ruled that out). I am open to any other advice/input now..thank GOD I saved and backed up all my files b4 this all happened. I am so ready to just throw this PC away.

    PS%26gt; I have attached photos also..have a looky-loo...and THX in advance for your time/patience/understanding/prayers/crit?etc..

    Trouble shooting methods I have tried but have failed are:(without Nvidia Graphics card Graphics card installed);

-Made sure power to my house was on..bill was paid and current.

-Made sure I am capable of reading and writing in English.

-Removed Nvidia Graphic Card from CPU case aka uninstalled.

-Made sure all my cables/wires are plugged in properly and in their correct ports, yes, even the -Monitor is installed correctly.

-Made sure RAM cards were in and secure.

-Turned on Power to my PC:

-Checked fans are running properly(even dusted them correctly before I started the pc)

-Turned on monitor(which is connected properly to PC via display/VGA cord).

-Hit delete and Tab buttons as suggested to enter Bios-didn't work(keyboard is new and installed correctly to pc).

    -Turned off PC.

-Took out Battery for 10-15 minutes(battery is not old or defective)

    -Tried clearing/resetting/jumping CMOS.

    -Re-installed battery.

    -Booted PC

-CMOS/Battery remedy didn't work..computer still stuck on Post screen:

    http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/ab334

-Delete/Tab keys still don't work, can not enter BIOS.

Remedies I have tried with Nvidia Card installed but didn't work either are:

-Made sure PC's power was off.

-Installed the Nvidia Graphics card correctly.

-Connected VGA/Display cable to Graphic card port..which is also connected to Monitor.

    -Turned on PC.

-Green light was on in front of pc.

-PC screen now filled with weird-fuzzy-patterns(see pic for details):

    http://i877.photobucket.com/albums/ab334

    -Turned off PC.

    -Tried to reset CMOS/Battery again.

    -Turned on PC.

-Nothing changed..still see those patterns on the screen.

    Other things I have tried:

Reinstalling Vista at boot up= FAILED. Screen stays stuck on Post screen and goes no further won't access any CD's or other media.

ASUS install at boot up= FAILED..post screen stuck-blah blah blah

    Changed battery(again)= FAILED

How do I get my Acer Aspire 5515 to boot from CD?

I have acquired an Acer Aspire 5515 from Wal-Mart a few weeks ago, which came preinstalled with Vista. After a while, I realized that Vista sucks. I tried to install Windows XP, but in order to do that, (from all the guides I have seen), I must first boot the XP installation CD first. For some reason, even though I went into the BIOS and changed the boot order, there appears to be no difference. The standard boot screen shows up. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to be able to boot from the CD first. Any tips, guys? How do I get my Acer Aspire 5515 to boot from CD?
this link may help you to get it to boot the disc from the dvd/cd drive, just follow the directions in BOOT OPTIONS from a Program within the operating system.it may be that you also have to use Acer eLock Management program to unlock the drive, that's the second link.I must warn you reverting back to xp may mess up your computer, that laptop was made for vista and it could be that you revert to xp the computer may not fuction properly and there may not be any drivers for xp for that laptop.have a very close look at the 3rd link also.need more help email me.How do I get my Acer Aspire 5515 to boot from CD?
Here's what you do. start up the lappy and tap F2 until your in your bios and change your serial at config to the native selection. Now XP will install. Here's a link to get your drivers. Acer has horrible support for drivers so you have to go to the Emachines website to get your drivers for XP. (Acer bought Emachines.) Good luck! http://support.gateway.com/support/drive

Go to Control Panel\Display\Settings\Advanced and disable ';hot keys'; feature. You need to uncheck the box that says ';enable hot keys';.

    That should solve the problem.

  • Please help!! Computer keeps freezing at Windows XP logo/boot screen during start-up! What to do?

HELLLPPP! Please disregard the length of this post. It's for a good cause. ty.

I own a Gateway 831 GM PC with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP 2.

The problem is that I cannot turn on my computer anymore as it keeps getting stuck at the boot screen/ Windows XP logo with the loading bar going from left to right beneath it. It presumes to load for a few seconds and then stops in the middle and freezes altogether. It would probably stay that way for months if I let it. I have to manually hold down the power button to turn it off.

I have tried everything I can think of:

Virus scans from updated Malwarebytes and AVG come out clean.

Did a Disk Defragmeantation two days ago.

Did a Chkdsk, but as my computer restarted after its completion, it froze at that screen.

Chose ';Last known configuration that worked'; from the F8 menu. As it restarted, it got stuck at the boot screen.

Did a System Restore, which maybe restored successfully but did not solve the problem as when it restarted the computer upon completion, the computer, you guessed it, froze at that blasted screen!!!

I am lucky to be here under safe mode, which is the only thing that works, that is, IF my computer doesn't freeze. Now, I can't seem to find any hardware change that may have caused this. And the system (C:, D: drives) itself is ';healthy'; according to computer management. I still have a lot of free space.

Note: I did not receive a Windows XP CD with the comp. I tried to make recovery discs after I bought it, but some error caused it to only create four out of the necessary five discs.

How do I fix this? What should I do? I'm not very tech savvy, so please lay it easy on me with the jargon. I really cannot afford a technician at the moment. THANKS a ton. Please help!! Computer keeps freezing at Windows XP logo/boot screen during start-up! What to do?
Maybe theres a problem with your CPU exhaust. maybe it is not working properly and ur CPU is heating up causing the PC to freeze. Contact some hardware expert. He will clean the fan at the back of the CPU or u can do it yourself if u have a vacuum cleaner. Please help!! Computer keeps freezing at Windows XP logo/boot screen during start-up! What to do?
get a professional to check out all of your problems

it may help instead of sitting around crying
it appears to be a hardware/driver problem since safe mode works fine and malware scans turn up nothing.

My fist step would be to test the hard drive, just to be sure.

My second step would be to perform a repair install. There are write ups all over the internet about that. If that still doesn't wor then backup important files and o a complete reinstall.

If it still doesn't work then you have some bad hard ware.
    Hi ,

As you have stated that Your PC works in Safe mode so Please go in Safe Mode and from there go to RUN. In Rum Type MSCONFIG and press Ok.

    System configuration utility comes up.

go to the Services TAB and below click on the BOX hide Microsoft services and then Uncheck all the useless services from there

after that go to Startup TAB next to Services TAB and UNCHECK most of the names except the command which shows c:\windows\system files after that Press OK and Restart your PC. It should Solve your Problems.

Enjoy your Work and do create your Recovery Disc again and take the Backup of your files for precautions.

    All the Best

    hello.

1.first of all unplug the rams and change the slots of the rams.

    2. check this out that any heat sinker is not getting too much heat.

    3. be sure that fans are working well on their speed.

    4. unplug the data cable of the hard drive and replug it.

try these and check your pc.
This is because of the computer檚 registry. The registry is a very complex and often misunderstood component of Windows. It檚 vital to your computer檚 operation. Think of the registry as your computer檚 brain. And everything you do on the computer, everything you install or remove, is stored in the brain. When you remove things, very often certain registry entries are left behind, like memories. But these memories are good for absolutely nothing.

The registry hangs on to them, though, and eventually it gets so full that it檚 hard to find things that are important now. The registry is probably the culprit if your computer freezes randomly.Consequently, one of the best solutions in managing the situation is to use registry cleaning tools http://perfect-your-computer.com with great power and capacity to completely flush out all junk files and fix all errors found.
This sounds like a pretty complex hardware problem. At this point you should contact the store where you bought the computer or take it into an expert to have them look at. I'm thinking that it could definitely be a problem with the fan.

    Cheers,

How do I create a boot screen for Windows XP (installed first) and 98?

I'm trying to make a boot screen so I can choose between Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Home Edition. The problem? Windows 98 SE doesn't contain a boot.ini (that I can see, even with hidden files shown), creating a boot.ini doesn't seem to do anything, and trying to run 98 via multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WIND?Windows 98 SE'; in boot.ini from XP just returns an error that ';hal.dll is either missing or corrupt'; (although it isn't -- it's just Windows 98 being confused because it's not the active partition). Changing that line to F:\=';Microsoft Windows 98 SE';, and trying to select it, only makes the computer reboot. Currently, the only way I can seem to change between 98 and XP is by switching the active partition via fdisk -- and in doing so, both operating systems run, but I must change the active partition via fdisk every time. Not that it's important or anything, but I used Partition Magic 8 to create the partition that Windows 98 is on now, and installed it by copying the contents of the Windows 98 install disk (E:\Win98\) to F:\Windows\Options\Cabs. It works great, I just have this snag. By the way, here are my drives and partitions:

Local Disk (C:) / partition(1) / Windows XP Home Edition

    Recovery (D:) / partition(2) / Recovery

    CD Drive (E:)

    WIN98 (F:) / partition(3) / Windows 98 SE

Any suggestions? How do I create a boot screen for Windows XP (installed first) and 98?
You can't create a boot selection screen if you installed XP first and then Win 98. It should be Win 98 first and then XP. Let XP create the dual boot configuration.

Remember, when Win 98 was released in the 90's, it didn't know yet that there's going to be a Win XP. Whereas when XP came out, it knew that there older versions of Windows so it has a way of recognizing it.

It goes the same for newer versions of Windows. If you want to have a multi-boot configuration, the order of installation should be from older version to newer version. How do I create a boot screen for Windows XP (installed first) and 98?
right click the my computer icon %26gt;properties %26gt;advance tab %26gt;Startup and recovery - settings.

In the pop up you can choose the OS, the boxes should be ticked to display OS for 30 seconds.

    Now click Edit.

In there you have to put in the string for windows 98. I dont know how you can do this because you should have loaded 98 first then XP, and XP would have done it for you.

Note , each Operating system needs to be on its own partition. You cannot have both on the same partition.

to find out what to put into there you could do this

grab another hard drive and install it,

partition it with a CD file

    load 98

    load xp

look what is in that file and save it in a memory stick

    change hdd

    update that file.

reformat that other hdd and put it in as a slave for extra space.

How can you tell a GOP Internet ';operative'; from a concerned citizen ...?

my answer: look at the ever-changing screen names and then the profiles. Shiraz for example, is now zihar but with the same avatar ... and back to 3 points at level 1 because he/she obviously got booted for insults/epithets.

also, questions are 100% political. the rest of us have some other interests mixed in, but we're not getting paid to do this.

any thoughts? How can you tell a GOP Internet ';operative'; from a concerned citizen ...?
You don't really think anyone gets paid for this do you? I guess if that is so, then Kerry got it doubly wrong. You don't get stuck in Iraq if you mess up in college, you get stuck on Yahoo! Answers.

This just is amusing and fills the time while I wait for various research items to run.How can you tell a GOP Internet ';operative'; from a concerned citizen ...?
I dig your avatar by the way,but I never changed my name on here and I side with the GOP because thats where real common sense and my beliefs lie, theyre are hate mongers on both sides and thatrs too bad if they cant completely control themselves but there are some questions you cant help but get smart-@ss with and I'm sorry to say I'm guilty too, glad you saw what you saw though best of....
    I'm with tok h.
I don't think Shiraz is a paid GOP ';operative';. The people I DO wonder about is the ones that have no contact information other than their 360 page, and their pictures represent them as a VERY attractive woman, they claim to be married, but have no pictures of themselves with their husband, or even pictures of their husband ALONE on their page.

Or the people who pose as celebrities in order to have their opinions heard.

Or the ones who claim to be MIT graduates but can't spell worth anything, and make grammatical errors that I learned NOT to make when I was in second grade.

Oh, and none of those that I mentioned are Republicans, by the way. And ALL they post questions in is politics, but they do occasionally answer questions in other categories.

    Hmm...makes a person wonder.

By the way, I mostly post in Religion/Spirituality or Politics %26amp; Government, but I am not paid to do so. I wish I was.
Interesting! So why then did I get reported for disagreeing with the Democrat point of view with a simple ';Nasty treat'; as an answer? I know it's hard to believe that there might be DNC operatives around here, too.
Do the Demon-rats have their own operatives also?

it sounds like you may have changed your memory configuration. what I would do is uninstall any memory you may have recently put in and try it again. it could be a bad memory stick or the wrong type.

  • How to access BIOS in XP to change ROM order?

i got the windows\system32\config\system error today, and i need to access bios to change the rom boot order so that the xp cd-rom boots before the hard drive. when i hold ';del'; buring boot, it has alot of grey lines at the bottom for a bit, then goes to the error screen again. how do i access bios? How to access BIOS in XP to change ROM order?
First, if all you need to do is boot to the CD-ROM first, your BIOS might support a ';Boot Menu'; option that allows you to temporarily change boot order without going into the CMOS settings. A number of motherboards with AWARD BIOS installed have this feature: usually by pressing F11. A menu then appears, asking which device you want to boot to (external USB, optical drive, hard drive, etc.).

If you need to make changes in the BIOS, it's possible that the Delete key is not how you access the system BIOS. It varies by manufacturer. I've worked on PCs that use Delete, F8 and F10 and there may be others as well.

If you're *sure* that Delete will get you into your CMOS settings, make sure you're tapping it and not holding it down. The POST screen should briefly show ';Loading Setup...'; or something similar when you've done it right.

I can't suggest what another user here recommends and resetting your BIOS by removing the battery (or by resetting it in the more traditional fashion and moving the jumper on the motherboard). That will wipe ALL of your CMOS settings; restoring them to factory defaults, which may not be appropriate for your particular system. How to access BIOS in XP to change ROM order?
When your bios is loading it says at the bottom press f8 to access options or setup. Try that. Then go to boot order and put cd-rom first.

    Hope this helps!
you have to keep tapping ';del'; just after you press the power button on some pcs, on others you keep tapping f8.

or you can just take out the cmos battery for 10 mins, this will reset the bios.
try this. when you first power up the computer start tapping F8 and it should give you several different boot options. choose the one that says safe mode with command prompt and hit enter. if the computer boots in safe mode, first install the windows cd into the cd drive, then go to the command prompt and type in, ';sfc.exe/scannow';, and hit enter. this is a system tool that scans your windows files and fixes the ones that are corrupt or missing. as far as accessing the bios goes, usually tapping the delete key will bring it up, but some pc's are different. my brother has a compaq presario and i know that you have to hit a different key to access the bios. it usually tells you what to press on the first screen that comes up before windows starts to load

The long beep is a POST (Power On Self Test) error code.

Go to the PC Mfg or motherboard web site to find what that means.
Sounds like the RAM. Try re-seating or replacing.
It could also be a corrupt registry hive or corrupt system file, Boot.ini or Master Boot Record. All of the answers above are valid. Hard to tell. Best thing to do would find out from your manufacturer what the POST is telling you. Those ';long beeps every 3 seconds'; are an indication of your problem. Most likely hardware related, but if you machine is rebooting after the splash screen you could have more than one problem.
it seems that you could have a memory problem and a graphic card problem

here is a link to the beeps that your computer is making, just look for the right beeps and you will find your problem

as for your zoom issue, try hitting the reset button on your monitor.

the other issue could be the settings in Windows, maybe the screen size is not correct and causing the zoom problem

    hope this helps =)

Vista wont boot. says Ctrl+alt+del to restart..Help!!!?

Hello, I am new so please speak like you would to a cave woman. I have vista ultimate on my laptop. Its a hp pavillion dv600. I was running tune up utilities and pressed ok to compress c.drive. I stopped it as soon as i saw I had hit the button and cancelled it. Then when it restarted it says BOOTMGR is compressed Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart..I do and it doesn't restart. It says Intel (r) Boot Agent FE V4.1.18 Copyright 1997-2005 Intel corporation

and then the ctrl+alt+del to restart..I went into the Phenoix bios and tried restoring defaults by hitting F10 like it says at the screen on the bottom left when the HP screen comes up for a min.I changed it to stay up for 5 sec cause it was just flashing. It also gives a option to push esc to change boot and F12 to boot from Lan. i dont know what to do please help..thanksI also Have a desktop running windows crystal .Idk my bro sets it all up but he is MIA..If the F12 option that says boot from Lan is something I can use? How?Vista wont boot. says Ctrl+alt+del to restart..Help!!!?
Try to reboot your laptop and while rebooting press F8. You will have a screen showing different options. Select Start Windows from last known working configuration.

I hope it helps with your problem.

computer problem.Vista wont boot. says Ctrl+alt+del to restart..Help!!!?
Try booting from safe mode (press F8 during start up then select safe mode from the list)

If you can boot in that then decompress your drive from there then reboot in normal mode
Duh.... you screwed up the boot sequence software. When using a computer, keeping your head out of your hindie should be your main priority. Look twice, push once.

The operating system needs to be repaired. Playing with the bios, looking for the ';any'; key, cleaning the screen, reseating the memory, etc. won't help. Find someone that KNOWS how to make the repair and get it repaired. All else is folly.

Changing the boot logo on jailbroken iPod touch?

I have a jailbroken iPod touch 2nd generation. It's jailbroken with redsn0w so I know how to actually change my boot and restore logo but my problem is the size of the images. The images I recently changed it with are way too small so I was wondering if someone could walk me through what I need to do to make the images the right size so it fits the whole screen. I found this video (Link at the very bottom of the screen)

And I have it saved as a file, I would love to make it my boot video for when I first turn on my computer and XP is loading.

Is there any software I could use? Or special code I need to change in my computer to do so? Any advice or know how would be great. Thanks! :D

You can't. You have to have a crappy picture. And changing it requires tuning software that will do it all for you, because if you fiddle about with it yourself, you could screw up your PC.Making a video your boot screen ?
Did you notice that it's a *VISTA* animation? That's because XP can't do an animated desktop. (The ';software'; you need is an upgrade to Vista.)

It wasn't booting. Locked on preparing to run scandisk. I went into setup. Supposed to be able to change the order of boot devices. Wouldn't work. So I removed the hard drive and something else from the boot sequence and told it to boot from a cd I have. Now it won't boot at all. Black screen. How do I get back into setup from here? How do I get back into setup on a laptop after I told it to ignore the hard drive during it's boot sequence?
Tap F10 to get into the bios when booting up or F12 to get into the boot menu. Or, if you have the install disc, do a repair install. How do I get back into setup on a laptop after I told it to ignore the hard drive during it's boot sequence?
You will need a Windows XP or Vista CD, you have to reinstall the OS.
you have to get into the bios, usually it's by hitting furiously the delete key right at the beginning, or look on the net for what key your brand of laptop requires. I hate the ones that make it different from the almost universal delete key. good luck

How do I change the Boot to USB from it being on CD?

We are reformatting our laptop and have got a few problems. We have got to the stage where we have changed the Boot to CD, but our CD drive doesn't work properly and keeps cutting off on us so we can't fully reformat it without it cancelling on us. The XP disk is fine and we would be able to finish the reformat if the CD drive would work!

However, we've been told to do it using an USB, which we want to try. But, we don't know how to change the Boot drive to USB. We managed to change it to CD, but now we've done that different screens come up at the beginning of setup than before and it automatically starts reformatting from the disk in. Was wondering whether anyone could help us! Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! How do I change the Boot to USB from it being on CD?
It is difficult to give an exact answer without knowing a little more about your computer system.

In general, this option is available on newer computers (the mainboard must support it, and many newer ones do). A simple way to find out would be to go into the computer's BIOS while booting up. When you first turn on your computer, look for some text on the screen that says something like ';Press F11 or Delete to enter setup';. It is different for various computer systems. If you can't see any text, you'll just have to press the usual suspects when you see the first ';splash'; screen. I recommend Delete, F11, and F12. If it works, you'll be in the BIOS setup. You'll have to search around for the ';boot order'; or ';boot sequence'; option. If your computer supports it, you'll see USB as an option. Just move it before the CD or optical drive option.

Note: Changing settings in the BIOS can be very detrimental to the health of your computer. Do not mess with any settings that you do not understand. How do I change the Boot to USB from it being on CD?

How can I change my Xbox 360 resolution if I can't see the screen?

My console was previously hooked up to a high definition TV, but I've moved it over to an SD set. For some reason, though, the console is stuck in 1080i, so I can't see anything when I boot it up. I know it's working because I can hear the menu sounds and the startup sound, but since I can't see anything, I can't change the resolution to SD. Is there a way to reset this without being able to see the menus? How can I change my Xbox 360 resolution if I can't see the screen?
You need to change the selector on the video cables to TV even if you are using the component plugs (red, blue, green) (white, red). If you still don't get a picture then start your xbox and hold in the Y and Right Trigger till the dash comes up and everything will reset. When the xbox restarts it will be set at it's default resolution. More than likely just selecting TV on the av cables will fix your problem though.

You can check out this video if you don't understand when to hold Y and the Right Trigger.

On the AV cord, there is a button to switch from HD %26gt; TV, press the button down and your screen will not be black, common mistake, now you know how to fix it :)
Turn on the xbox, wait like 15-20 seconds, press the home button on the controller, go right twice, go down 3 times, press A 4 times but not fast. If you're currently on 1080i, press up then A for 720p, up twice then A for 480p, or down then A for 1080p.

i wantd to know from people with experience with vista os x.i was wondering if i should download it and if it was safe to do so also if it will affect my computer later on or somethng. here is whear you can download it http://www.vistaosx.net/ so should i get it or no. also i heard i changes your boot screen and log in screen is this true. and if so should i uninstall these programs im running log on studio vista windows fences. so please tell me more about it if its safe and how install and uninstall it thank you.????vista os x them questions?
I have used this program, and it is completely safe! It DOES NOT change your boot screen, unfortunately. It WILL change in the LOG IN screen to a starry, Mac(ish) wallpaper. It changes icons as well. If you need to uninstall it, it completely uninstalls as long as you follow the uninstall instructions on the website. Make sure that you DO NOT install this on Windows 7 or anything other than Vista, because it will screw up the computer because it was not meant for those Operating Systems. The install instructions are on the website and so are the uninstall instructions. The install is very easy, it's just like a normal installer and it is very easy to configure and install. Good luck!

PLZ HELP!!!How to do system restore with Linux(ubuntu)?
The linux cd cannot restore windows. You will have to use the windows cd to do a repair install and then use the ubuntu cd to install ubuntu.

Good luckHow to do system restore with Linux(ubuntu)?
You can't do a Windows System Restore with a Linux CD, you have to be running Windows to do it. (And that just restores the registry.) The first thing you have to try is a Windows Repair (with the Repair disk). If that doesn't work (or if you don't have the Repair disk), do a Windows upgrade with the Windows install disk. (If you don't have any Windows disks, there's not much you can do.)
Ok, all you need is a windows bootdisk, you damaged your mbr by playing with your boot splash. You can download one from bootdisk.com, get a windows 98se, or if you have the windows cd boot to that and select repair console, then run fixmbr and fixboot.

If you use a boot disk (floppy), run fdisk /mbr, that will repair your master boot record (mbr).
