How do I boot to single user?

The newest ubuntu distro. I keep entering my root password and it will not work I even tried caps lock but nothing. I need to change the root I press E on grub and edit the kernel by pressing E again exit by pressing enter (to save changes if I go back they are still there) finally esc to go back to the boot menu and booting ubuntu but it loads the GUI and gives me the login screen without giving me the prompt to change the root pw. What am I doing wrong? How do I boot to single user?
I think root password cannot be change once entered ,as you know password have to be entered during installation. It is better you format and install again.

Boot with the -s flag in grub. This will get you into single user mode.
