Computer won't boot, screen has colored lines thru it...RAM?

I am dual-booting XP and ubuntu. I recently upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 release. After the restart I was changing themes on ubuntu and I kept getting a message about the update manager being open. after killing processes and deleting the lock file I just restarted

This time i went to XP from the grub menu. It loaded up but then I got a BSOD with a mesage about a MEMORY error. So I turned it off waiting a while and restarted. This time it will load up but after a while red lines will come through the screen.

I just bought new ram Feb of this yr, and over the last few months key on my keyboard stopped working, as did my stylus for my tablet (it's a tablet pc). It would work again when I took the ram out and reseated it...

So I am hoping it is a RAM issue. As it was practically new, I called crucial and they will be exchanging my ram for a new one.

So to my QUESTION: With the fact that my keyboard/tablet worked after reseating, and the BSOD screen was a MEMORY error, do you think it was just a RAM issue or something more??? Could it have something to do with the UBUNTU update, although the OSs are on diff partitions?

(i am REALLY hoping it was the ram as i have no idea where my video card is located or how to replace it in a laptop esp since my screen swivels and if i remove screws my screen may fall out of place)Computer won't boot, screen has colored lines thru it...RAM?
Are you getting any beeps prior to start up?

If you hear 1 long and 2 short beeps directly after each other, you're video card is messed up.

Your video Card will be held in a PCI, AGP, or a PCI Express slot.

Check to see where you're monitor connects at in your computer. If it goes into a card than replace it, if it goes into your motherboard you have a onboard video problem -- and you'll have to buy a new motherboard, or just buy a video card.

But it does sound like video failure to me.Computer won't boot, screen has colored lines thru it...RAM?
Replace the RAM. An ubuntu update wouldn't affect memory allocation, that is a BIOS level function.

Bad RAM affects the video performance as well, your tablet PC (probably) has an embedded graphics chipset which uses the RAM for graphics. It is extremely difficult to replace the graphics on a tablet, the card (or chip) is usually soldered directly to the motherboard and if it does connect via a interface the part is manufacturer specific (and they usually only sell to licensed repair shops).
It sounds like a RAM problem, but if that doesn't work, I guess you could try and delete Ubuntu.
